  • Who can attend?
    Any grade 11 or grade 12 student who attends a Secondary School in Brantford or Brant County may apply to Tollgate SHSM Dual Credit programs.
  • When are the classes?
    Students attend the program during period 1 and 2 and then return to their home school for the remainder of the school day. The student’s transportation there and back is covered as part of the program.
  • What are the benefits?
    -Each class counts for two credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and help to meet the requirements of the Specialist High Skills Major(SHSM). -The SHSM program provides extra funding for each enrolled student to facilitate in increasing the quality of education in the classroom. This funding helps the program to provide specialized courses as well as capital expenditures in addition to other benefits that would otherwise not be available. -In addition, each student can earn an a college credit during the qualifying Dual Credit portion of the course.
  • How does the SHSM program work?
    The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry approved specialized program that allows students to gain credits toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and focus their learning on a specific economic sector at the same time. Students will be given the opportunity to take courses such as first aid, working at heights, and other industry related courses to help to develop specialized knowledge and skills required in the chosen field. Extra funding is provided by the Ministry of Education to help students enrolled in SHSM programs achieve the accreditation. Students will receive the prestigious SHSM red seal on their diploma when they complete all of the required components and earn their OSSD.
  • How does the Dual Credit program work?
    Dual credit programs allow eligible students in high school to take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards: their Ontario Secondary School Diploma a post secondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship High school students taking dual credit courses benefit from the supervision and support of their college instructor and the dual credit teacher at their school. Students also have access to a variety of college supports and services.
  • How do you sign up for the program?
    Students can sign up for any of the Tollgate SHSM and Dual Credit programs by speaking with their guidance councilor or visiting myBlueprint found in the My Library and Resources tab in Brightspace.
